So. Cal. Cyclocross season off and running! – September 18th Urban CX

September 22, 2005
The first race of the 2005 Southern California Cyclocross Series got off to a roaring start Sunday, Sept. 18th at the Urban Cyclocross with lots of riders and excitement. A record breaking 154 riders competed in race #1 of the 14 race series, held in Palos Verdes, CA under warm and sunny skies. Gone was the dark green foliage, a result of last year’s record rainfall in Southern California. Riders met a challenging course with hairpin turns, loose bark and soil that provided for more than enough thrills and spills. The infamous Kool N’ Fit run-up and double-wide barrier part way up the hill made for easy passing and showed who the good runners were! An excellent array of prizes and benefit drawings were a big hit with riders and fans courtesy of InCycle and Bicycling!

Trek and Lemond hosted the first Bike Demo Day of the series featuring their CX line-up including the XO-1 and Poprad. The focus of Demo Day is to give racers and spectators the chance to check out these bikes first hand and give them a chance to win one of these cool, new bikes as the series raises money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

The Firestone/Walker Brewery Men’s B race was won in commanding fashion by James Lowe of Ranchos Cycling. David Fulkerson took the victory within the last 100 meters of the race overtaking Jermaine Brown in the XS Energy Men’s C race. The crowd favorite junior races were won by newcomer, Didier Jourdain (SDBC) for the boys and State Champion Kendall Ryan (Scaryfast) for the girls, respectively.

For the Masters divisions… Clif Bar hosted, Jeff Prinz of SDBC for 30+ and Detroit Coffee awarded 2004 Series Champion, Chris Gallup of Celo Pacific winner of the 40+ race. Firestone/Walker Brewery hosted the 50+ men’s race with the win going to our icon of cyclo-cross in So Cal, Jonathan Livesay of PAA/Merrill Lynch.

The Shimano women’s race was won by cross series director and supporter Dorothy Wong of Kelly Bike Company. At the end of the day, Dot told us, “I was so amazed at the turnout and how the hard work by everyone to get their friends involved paid off and turned the first race into something special with the highest turnout ever in Southern California!”

The Kool N Fit men’s A race podium was swept by team Celo Pacific. The race was won in commanding fashion by Brent Prenlow. Prenzlow is showing good early season form and led for most of the race. Taking second and winning the stud award of the day AFTER winning the single speed race (on a fixed gear!) was Anthony Smith of Celo Pacific followed by teammate John Behrens.

The series picks up again in two weeks on October the 2nd at a never before used course in Torrance, CA. Check out our website: www.socalcyclocross.org for more info!
